To provide a comprehensive range of Veterinary services and products to clients and pets of Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding districts. With a team of knowledgeable, experienced and helpful staff, as well as a well-equipped Veterinary Hospital, we strive to provide for all your pet’s needs. We endeavor to build relationships with our clients and patients. Our Veterinarians use up to date evidence based veterinary information in conjunction with the current diagnostic equipment and treatment to enable us to best assist your pet throughout their lives.
Our Veterinarians
Dr Derek Clover (BVSc)
Dr Clover qualified from Onderstepoort in 2006 and has been at Hayfields Vet since 2014. Dr Clover enjoys all aspects of small animal veterinary medicine and surgery . He takes pride in being a vet that uses a combination of excellent clinical, diagnostic and surgical skills to assist both his patients and their owners. Dr Clover, Dr Adank and Dr Wallace jointly own Hayfields Vet.
Dr Adriaan Adank (BSc, BVSc)
Dr Adank qualified from Onderstepoort in 2010 and thereafter worked in mixed animal practice in Namibia for 8 years. During this time he developed a special interest in orthopaedic surgery and due to his experience in treating large animals, he is happy seeing all creatures’ great and small. Dr Adank joined the practice in September 2018 and became a part-owner of Hayfields Vet in September 2020.
Dr Kate Wallace (BVSc)
Kate graduated from Onderstepoort in 2005 and joined the Hayfields team in 2022. She is a kind and sympathetic vet with a special interest in surgery, cardiology and pain management. Kate became a partner at Hayfields Vet in 2024. She lives in Hilton with her husband and 3 young children.
Dr Andrea Paul (BSc,BVSc)
After qualifying from Onderstepoort in 2014, Dr Andrea Paul moved to Wartburg where she now lives with her husband. In addition to working part time at Hayfields Vet, Dr Paul also runs a small animal consulting room in Wartburg. She is a dedicated and compassionate vet who always puts her patient’s needs first.
Our Veterinary Nurses
Sr Leslie Shooter (DVN, BFA, BSc Hon)
Leslie Shooter qualified at Olds College in Canada as an AHT and joined Hayfields Vet in 2006. Leslie has degrees in art (painting & drawing) from the University of British Columbia, as well as in Zoology & Primatology from the University of Calgary. Leslie assists the vets in theatre, maintains and monitors anaesthetics, takes radiographs, manages the pharmacy as well as other nursing duties. Leslie also runs our Hills Pet Slimmer program and is available to answer general questions on diet, behaviour, parasite control and pet health. Fun Fact – most of the artwork in the Practice was done by Leslie.
Sr Janice Clover (DVN)
Sr Janice Clover qualified from Onderstepoort in 2004 and spent 4 years working in England and Pretoria before settling back home in the Midlands where she worked in Hilton for 10 years. Janice joined Hayfields Vet in 2019 as a part time Veterinary Nurse.
She holds a special interest in anesthesia, pain management, cytology and microscopy.
Our Receptionists
Kerry Nel (NDip Horticulture)
Kerry is a trained Horticulturist and joined Hayfields Vet in 2009. Since then she has been responsible for food and stock orders. If your pet has a specific dietary requirement, she will be more than happy to assist in ensuring that the food is available.
Aimee Hendriksz (MCP, MCSE, MCSD)
Aimee has been with Hayfields Vet since 2011. Along with ensuring that we have stock of the best beds, toys and treats for your pets, Aimee also looks after our debtors. If you have any special requests, she will try her best to source what you need.
Shannon Torlage
Shannon joined the Hayfields Vet in 2019 working the early morning shift and every second weekend. She is a very kindhearted person and always willing to help others.
Our Kennel Assistants
Francina Gugwana
Has been at HVH since 2013 and lives on the property with her daughter & grandson. She has completed the F10 Hygiene course and Khula kennel assistant course. Francina is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the hospital and kennels, sterilizing our surgical instruments and assisting in the basic nursing care of our patients
Nelly Myaka
Nelly joined HVH in 2021 and lives’ on the property along with Skye the practice dog. Nelly is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the hospital and kennels, sterilizing our surgical instruments and assisting in the basic nursing care of our patients
Sandile Nene
Is our part time veterinary and kennel assistant and is responsible for maintaining our beautiful gardens.
Practice Pets
Skye
Skye was adopted from PARR and is our practice dog who is incredibly smart and energetic. She enjoys visiting with our hospital patients and absolutely loves the abundance of treats available.
